The day Uganda felt like “home”…

9 months in country today. My clothes have a closet, my hat has a hook, each picture has a place, and I officially have a gas stove (WITH gas), so I can cook when there is no power (which is almost every day in Kitgum), besides using my hot plate! WOO!

As I was leaving school, when asked where I was going, I replied to my teachers “acito ganga”, which in Acholi literally translates to “I am going to my home” and today, it really felt that way. I have become closely acquainted with all the teachers at my school. I am now the designated “hot sauce bringer”, which I rotate between my four favorites from home, so we can literally “spice up” our beans and posho every day. I am able to joke and play, while simultaneously attempting to get work done (‘attempting’ being the key word here)…. many pupils feel comfortable enough to come up and ask me to pick out level-appropriate books for them, and one even asked me to read WITH HER! SUCCESS! I have made some outstanding connections with a few locals, and consider some of them my best friends in the country. The settling in is slow, and I still have years’ worth to learn, but we are getting there ‘’mot, mot’’. Slowly, slowly….
